11 Vacation Safety Tips

from:

Contributed by Roger Wakefield

We have all heard stories of the awful problems that can occur as a result of surprise illness whilst on holiday.

A family who got struck by a serious bout of 'montezuma's revenge' whilst trying to enjoy a vacation in some delightful location and as a result, spent the whole holiday in the apartment or villa. A elderly relative who foolishly imbibed the
local water, suffered atrocious stomach illness and fever and still hasn't got over it weeks later. One of the children gets bitten by some local insect and needs expensive medical treatment.

The outcome is usually the same, it ruined the holiday, caused financial ruin and put them off overseas holidays for many years to come.

Without doubt, you don't want this to happen to you, so here are a few tips to keep you safe and healthy and make sure that have a thoroughly enjoyable holiday:

Before you go ========================================== Clearly you can't forecast every potential problem, there are a few easy precautions you can take to make sure you have a healthy holiday.

* Don't forget to pack any prescription medicines that you or your family members take regularly.

* Find out how significant an issue biting insects are in the countries you are visiting. Depending on the magnitude of the problem, you may need to pack insect repellent and permethrin or deet impregnated mosquito nets.

* Make sure that you remember to pack first aid supplies that may be required in your holiday resort.

* Do some background checks and check out about the weather conditions at your destination. This will affect the clothes you take, whether you should take a sun hat and sunglasses, and the type of sun lotion that you need to take with you.

Make sure you have travel insurance =========================== Travel insurance policies have different coverage, so decide what cover you need
and ensure that your insurance policy provides what you need. Before leaving on your trip, read and become familiar with your chosen policy and in particular, its limits. If you are not clear over bits of the insurance policy, make sure you get a
clear explanation before starting your vacation. Most importantly, make sure that you include the health policy with your travel documents.

* When deciding on your insurance policy, check the ways in which they pay the claims. Do you need to pay any medical costs you incur first, followed by a reimbursement, or is the money transferred immediately from the insurer to the health care provider ?

* With your chosen travel policy, are you allowed buy extra coverage if you decide to extend your stay?

* When choosing your insurance policy, check whether each policy needs you to just use their specified doctors and health centers.

* When choosing your insurance policy, look for how the health policy interprets terms such as 'pre-existing condition', or 'medical exclusions'. Do they affect your coverage?

Food safety when overseas================================== One of the very worst things that can happen to you on your holiday, is to get a nasty dose of food poisoning. Here is a list of tips to help you keep in good health in your chosen destination:

* If possible, avoid eating high risk foods. Some types of food are safer than others, for example, any freshly cooked food is usually comparatively safe, also fresh vegetables that must be peeled prior to eating.

* If possible, avoid eating raw meat or any meat that is cooked earlier and served later in the day.

* Don't take risks with the tap water. Make sure you only drink branded bottled water, and always check the cap to make sure it is not an old bottle that has been filled with tap water by unscrupulous sellers. If you are unsure over the safety of the local water, it is wise to even avoid ice cubes in your drinks. If you use the local drinking water, boil it well before use.
